Queen Ursula

I finally finished this, and with a day or two to spare. I'm a slow painter, so I'm gonna have to work on that, on top of already a list of things I need to work on. Anyway, I like how this one turned out. I learned a lot throughout the process. Cheers.

Managed to scan these on my tiny regular scanner. The first three are all 11x17, and were done around a week or two after my car accident. You can tell, by the shitty quality. Honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking, I could've fix them, but I'm done with them, moved onto better (or not) things.

Aguila Roja (Red Eagle) Think Zorro mixed with Assassin's Creed with martial arts skills, set in the 17th century Spain.

I cant excuse myself on this one. The anatomy and perspective are way off. Blagh.

quick study

Umm, never been good at painting, picking the right colors, or speed.. I rendered this in about 2 hours, 2:30 maybe. Instead of going the B&W value route first, I jumped straight to color. It's hard, and I probably picked a hard ref picture. But I did learn a few things from this. Hopefully it's a step in the right direction.

R.I.P. Dwayne McDuffie

Well, this certainly is a huge loss for both the comics and animation industry. You can read the article covering his life and passing in more detail here. As the article points out, he became "a voice in the industry for diversity, particularly fighting against stereotypical portrayals of people of color on the comic book page." Characters such as Static Shock and Icon were his creations.

I just saw the All-Star Superman adaptation, and while I've never really read the whole graphic novel, the movie seemed to capture a lot of the meaningful themes of the comic. McDuffie adapted that for the screen. He had done a lot of good work for the animation community. Ben 10 wasnt exactly my favorite show, but it certainly did have its following. It just comes as a great shock to me. The man had so much talent, his name was getting bigger and even non-comic book people were getting to know his name. He's one of those people that I wish I could've met him, gotten to talk to him a bit at least in a convention.

He will be missed.

How to Draw Bambi - with Andreas Deja

Andreas Deja is already in my list of amazing animators. He was the one that created the designs for Hercules, Jaffar, and Gaston (aka original the original douchebag) He makes it look so easy, which is the best part.

Sketchbook

This was off a video clip of a woman throwing a sheet around. I paused it in selected frames and gave myself between 1-3 minutes before letting it play again. It was a good speed exercise, which I need more practice on.

A bit more progress on the Ursula redesign. Made a tighter pencil sketch to get a better grip on this. I sorta messed up on the perspective of the tentacle on the left, but I'll fix that up once I get on the coloring stage.

The Big Bang - how it really happened

Prelude to Eden - a 1995 UK short animated film. Yea, I think this is the closest account of how we came to be.

The Eye of the Storm - And the Making Of

Technically a music video, technically a mind blowing short film with heavy elements of CG.

But that's not even the best part. If you are like me, who likes to see how these things are made, check out the pre and post VFX side-by-side comparison.

In-fraking-credible. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

sketches (running out of clever titles)

My take on Ursula from the Little Mermaid. This one will eventually be a full illustration.

Deep in the Sea - process and mess ups

Here's the process for the "Deep in the Sea" drawing that I've yet to color (lazy) I goes through even the so called "Tentacle penis" stage that, everyone who saw it, would not shut up about it.

Original idea. Nothing much to say. I think it was more or less tiredness of seeing so many 'Little Mermaid' fan arts, specially all with the title "Under the Sea". Enough already people jeez!

Here's where things just go wrong. It was a good render, but it looks like she's riding that tentacle like a----um, yea...But the idea is solid now.

So a few doodles here and there, some advice from a few experienced artists, and there, a rock is born!! (to cover up the tentacle riding junk)

Ta-da. This needs to be colored ASAP!

Akira biker gangster

Something I did for the CharacterFORGE at CGHub, to design a character that would fit in the Akira biker gang world. It was fun, but I felt I had more control over the line art than when I started the painting process (Which I need to work on, this is, well, kind of a mess, so I gotta keep working on that.

Yes, even more sketches

Trying to find a decent redesign for Superman. Quite frankly though, I think the blue and red underwear is good enough.

Bruce Lee vs The Predator. I know, I know. But this would be an amazing fight. And most certainly entertaining, if done with 80s special effects.

Rant - DA shenanigans

This is quite a long rant, with no real point of end really. So read at your own peril.

I've been reading around and looking at the popular deviant members' journals and their newer stuff. Unlike them, I'm not gonna go into a pity party, frankly, I read so many just this morning that it disgusted me (Montyoum). The badly Hetalia fanart and pairings (I dont even know what Hetalia is about. I rather not know) That and the 'popular' front page people raping anatomy right in the butt (Genzoman).

Anyway, About a month and a half ago I was in a pretty shitty car accident, in which I fractured my back and ruined the beginning of the year for me. All the plans that I had, my job, mobility (for a bit) all gone. A week or so ago I was finally able to start drawing (body cast was in the way, it was very uncomfortable) and I've been sketching here and there, started a few animation tests. No biggie.

Then I started getting more active at CGHub.com, cause I was always a lurker, always afraid to try stuff out, compete in their challenges, afraid to get my ass handed to me. So I've been trying to work on a few of them, mainly trying to keep busy and not get down and acting like a wimp over how I missed out my semester, I cant go to work or go on with my social life (or a bar, goddamn I need a beer so badly) But things have been working out great though. I'm being challenged, I feel like I HAVE to keep up, and I need to work on my weaknesses (painting, me? horrible) I'm trying to work out on this animated short, and not leaving my life/Master studies aside, and just keeping busy.

My point with all of this is, I feel a lot of artists here could probably use a boost of, well, everything. If you know whatever crap you submit will go to the front page, yet your description talks about how shitty it is, and how you hate it, or how it took you 10 minutes to make it (even if it looks like you took a lot more than 10 mins) then why submit it? WHY ARE YOU HAPPY WITH SUBMITTING SHIT?! Unless, you are somehow lying and trying to make yourself look badass, which works in this community very well, apparently.

Bah, enough of this rant, ya jackwagons.

From paper to screen

Here's a sneezing animation test I did a few months ago for class. I sketched out the whole thing first, to see if it would work out, then got it approved. I was actually pleased with the results. I need to go back and start animating more.

more sketches yargh

This was the concept that I went with for the Akira Character Forge at CGHub.com

About Gobelins

Basically, Gobelins is the equivalent of the toughest military institution, for animators. It produces some of the best animators of the planet, in my humble opinion.

Why? Why does my school seem to be the complete opposite of this? I mean, I've learned stuff, but I dont think I'm being pushed hard enough.

Is CalArts the equivalent of that in the US?

I dont know who this is...

I was practicing painting and colors, cause really, I'm extremely terrible at that. It was supposed to be a self portrait. Quite frankly, that guy looks too good to be me.

Best Superman fan-short film. Ever.

Seriously. Someone give this man a ton of money to direct a new Superman animated series. It's funny how Batman:TAS was meant to fit into the world of the Fleischer Superman era. I think this could really work. In any case, it's an amazing short, and it just got me all excited and more inspired to start working some more.

more sketching and stuff

More sketches. Yay. Also, I think I may run with actually making the animated short of said Robot Jerk (post before this one) I talked with a mentor of sorts, advised me on how to approach it. I think, dispate on how I ended and started my year (in a hospital bed, and using a walker to move around) it just might end up being my most productive year so far.

Wonder if he's got wi-fi there..(ba-dum-psh!)

I...I dont even know.
